Symbolism
Two impoverished, weary figures trudge through the snow past a brightly lit church window: one limps on crutches, injured and ill, the other is barefoot and wrapped in a thin shawl. The stained-glass window with its five pentacles glows just above them, a symbol of shelter, charity and spiritual support that is literally within reach. Yet, consumed by their suffering, neither looks up to notice the warmth and help so close at hand. The snow and bare feet convey poverty, illness and isolation; the church represents the aid that pride or despair keeps them from seeking.
